About South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST)

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology Foundation (SAAFoST) is an association of food science and technology professionals and other professionals serving South Africa’s food and related industries. SAAFoST aims to increase the knowledge base of food science and technology by fostering scientific research, publishing member journals, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, conferences, and assisting educational activities. The company is non-profit, run primarily by volunteers, and has approximately 2,000 members in southern Africa.

SAAFoST established the SAAFoST Foundation, which will be responsible for managing SAAFoST scholarships, awards, and academic awards.

The South African Association for Food Science and Technology Foundation (SAAFoST) awards scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students in the field of food science and technology. Scholarship is awarded based on 3 main factors: academic performance, demonstrated potential, and employment equity.

Scholarship will cover tuition fees up to R35,000 per year.

 Matric Student:

  • Application Review Period: October 2023
  • Scholarship Award Announcement: November 2023

 Undergraduate Students:

  • Application Review Period: January to February 2023
  • Announcement of the scholarship award: February 2023

Requirements Needed  To Apply For SAAFoST Bursaries

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

Matric students:

  • South African citizen
  • Have been a resident within South Africa for a minimum of 3 years before applying
  • Completed Further Education & Training Certificate (FETC) (General) qualification OR the equivalent
  • Achieved a minimum of level 5 (60-69%) for Physical Science and Mathematics (as well as Life Science, but not mandatory)
  • Enrolled to study full time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field
  • Enrolled to study at a recognised tertiary institute in South Africa
  • Be able to finish your qualification within the specified amount of time (i.e. – Undergraduate Degree upto B.Sc (Hons) = a maximum of 4 years, Diploma = a maximum of 4 years, B. Tech Degree = a maximum of 5 years)
  • *Preference will be given to Matric students with strong academic results or potential

Undergraduate students:

  • South African citizen OR South African permanent resident
  • Have been a resident within South Africa for a minimum of 3 years before applying
  • Have been a SAAFoST member for a minimum of 12 months before applying
  • Enrolled to study full time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field
  • Enrolled to study at a recognised tertiary institute in South Africa
  • Be able to finish your qualification within the specified amount of time (i.e. – Undergraduate Degree upto B.Sc (Hons) = a maximum of 3 years, Diploma = a maximum of 3 years, B. Tech Degree = a maximum of 4 years)
  • *Preference will be given to students with strong academic results or potential

 How To Apply For SAAFoST Bursaries

Download and complete the appropriate SAAFoST Bursary application form in either of the following formats:

Matric students: SAAFoST Bursary Application Form (Matric Students) (.pdf)
Undergraduate students: SAAFoST Bursary Application Form (Undergraduate Students) (.pdf)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

Matric students:

  • ID document OR passport (certified copy)
  • Passport sized photo (head & shoulders)
  • Grade 11 final results (certified copy)
  • Matric latest results (certified copy of)
  • Personal Statement (outlining the following: how your education and training within the food science and technology sector will make a positive impact in the scientific community and in your own life: max 1 A4 page)
  • Reference Letter (written by someone who has known you in a learning capacity for a minimum of 3 years)
  • National Benchmarking Test or Potential Test results from your selected tertiary institute

Undergraduate students:

  • ID document OR passport (certified copy)
  • Passport sized photo (head & shoulders)
  • Latest tertiary academic results (details on the application form)
  • Personal Statement (outlining the following: how your education and training within the food science and technology sector will make a positive impact in the scientific community and in your own life: max 1 A4 page)
  • Reference Letter (written by someone who has known you in a learning capacity for a minimum of 3 years)
  • Proof of registration for 2020 at your tertiary institute
