About Patrice Motsepe Bursary

Patrice and Precious Motsepe (Motsepe family) were the first families in Africa to join the “Donation Pledge”. The pledge of donation is the promise of the world’s richest individuals and families to donate most of their wealth to charity. The Giving Pledge was founded by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. Since its inception, the Motsepe family has pledged to donate half of their wealth to the poor.

The main goal of the foundation is to improve the living standards of the poor as well as the unemployed and marginalized in the country. This will be accomplished through various projects and initiatives that will help beneficiaries become independent and self-sufficient.

 Motsepe Foundation will provide scholarships in the following research fields:

  • Engineering
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Mathematics
  • Medical Research
  • Science
  • Agriculture
  • Technology
  • Business Research
  • Law
  • Art

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • South African citizen
  • Achieved a minimum average of 70% in Matric (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Studying or intend on studying within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • Studying or intend on studying at a recognized tertiary institute within South Africa
  • Excellent academic results
  • Proven financial need

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY

Download and complete the Motsepe Foundation Bursary Application Form (.pdf)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric mid-year results, if currently in Matric (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy)
  • Full academic record, if currently at tertiary level (certified copy)
  • Proof of residence (certified copy)
  • Parents/ guardians ID documents (certified copies)
  • ID documents of other household members (certified copies)
  • Parents/ guardians proof of income (latest payslips/ employment letter/ SASSA grant letter/ affidavit for informal traders/ death certificate if deceased etc – more detail can be found on the application form)

The following documents will also be required in the final stages of the bursary selection process:

  • Final matric results (certified copy)
  • University acceptance letter/ proof of registration
  • Student number
  • Fees statement, if currently at tertiary level
