About NSFAS
The National Student Financial Aid Program (NSFAS) was established on the basis of the National Student Financial Aid Program. NSFAS is a scholarship program that provides free and fully subsidized university education and training to working class and poor students in South Africa.
NSFAS’s vision is to provide financial aid to students from poor and working-class families who are attending public universities and TVET colleges.

The vision of NSFAS is to provide financial assistance to students from poor families and the working class to attend public universities and TVET colleges.
On December 16, 2017, former President Jacob Zuma announced that the South African government “will provide free and fully subsidized higher education and training to poor and active South African students under each phase”. This funding will be implemented in phases over five years, leading to the establishment of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) scholarship program.
Do NOT apply if you meet the following criteria:
- Foreign student (NOT a South African citizen)
- Total household income is over R350 000 per annum
- Completed a previous tertiary qualification
- Already applied and received funding
How to create a NSFAS profile:
- Go to nsfas.org.za
- Click on ‘MyNSFAS Account’
- Register and create a profile
Once you have applied to NSFAS, you should wait no longer than a week to have your application acknowledged. If you do not receive acknowledgment of your application, you are requested to call the Toll Free NSFAS call center (08000 673 27).
