About KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission

The KwaZulu Natal Film Commission (KZNFC) was established to assist in the development of skills in the province’s film industry. The organization was established in accordance with the provincial law passed in 2010. KZNFC’s vision is to promote KwaZulu Natal as a diversified, sustainable and competitive industry and a major film destination.

The partner organizations include: Ministry of Industry and Commerce (DTI); Ministry of Economic Development, Tourism and Environment (EDTEA); Industrial Development Corporation (IDC); National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF); KZN Tourism; Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife; Zulu Natal Trade and Investment Bureau; Dube Tradeport and three cities.

The KZNFC Scholarship Program was launched in 2014 to help solve the problem of skills shortage in the film industry in KwaZulu Natal. The scholarship is for students studying film and animation related studies at the University of KwaZulu Natal.

Scholarship will pay the following fees: enrollment fees, tuition fees, lodging fees, and prescribed textbooks.

Scholarships are awarded one academic year at a time; students must reapply for funds each year.

Shortlisted applicants will be contacted; If you do not receive feedback within 8 weeks of the application deadline, please consider that your application was not accepted.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • South African citizen
  • Under the age of 25 years (older students will only be considered in exceptional cases)
  • Reside with KwaZulu-Natal
  • Completed Matric OR currently in Matric
  • Studying or plan to study towards a Film and Animation Related Studies qualification (1st year to final year)
  • Studying or have been accepted to study at a tertiary institution in KwaZulu-Natal
  • Strong academic record
  • Disabled students are welcome to apply
  • Proven financial need

How to apply for scholarship

Download and fill in the KZN Film Commission Scholarship Application Form (.pdf)

Submit a clear copy of the following supporting documents and your completed application form (you need to submit these documents, if any items are missing, your application will be ignored):

  • Identity document (certified copy)
  • Matric June exam results, if currently in Matric (certified copy)
  • Matric certificate, if complete Matric (certified copy)
  • Latest transcript, if currently in higher education (certified copy)
  • In Admission letter from a higher education institution in KwaZulu Natal Province
  • Higher education institution’s 2020 fee schedule (on the institution’s letterhead)

Parent/guardian family income certificate (not more than 3 months) (last pay slip or Employment letter (if employed)/certificate of SASSA subsidy (if applicable) nde/certificate of pension, if pension/affidavit, if unemployed, etc.)

Parent/guardian’s bank statement, and support/sworn If you are separated or divorced
