About Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa

The Southern African Institute of Municipal Engineering (IMESA) was established in 1961 to promote and represent the interests of more than 1,000 individual members, including municipal engineers and companies in the municipal engineering and built environment industries.

The mission of is to promote and cultivate excellence in the engineering industry to help benefit communities and their municipalities. The

IMESA Scholarship Program was started in 2000 to provide financial aid to students who cannot afford to study in the field of civil engineering, and to recognize the achievements of the families of IMESA members.

The Scholarship Program of the Southern African Institute of Municipal Engineering (IMESA) is for two types of students:

  • Scholarship Program A: For the family members of non-IMESA members
  • This scholarship is for students studying civil engineering who have no funds, otherwise they will study Sorry. It will only cover tuition fees and prescribed books.
  • Scholarship Program B: For relatives of IMESA members
  • The scholarship will be awarded to current and future students who are children of IMESA members and have been members for at least 3 years. It will only cover tuition fees and prescribed books.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

Bursary Scheme A: for dependents of non-IMESA members

  • South African citizen
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying full time towards a Civil Engineering degree qualification (or related engineering degree as approved by the IMESA Executive Committee)
  • Studying at an accredited and recognized tertiary institute in South Africa
  • Proven financial need (do not have sufficient financial resources to further your studies)

Bursary Scheme B: for dependents of IMESA members

  • South African citizens
  • Have completed Matric or are currently in Matric
  • You are studying full-time or are planning to study a degree in civil engineering (or a relevant engineering degree approved by the IMESA Executive Committee)
  • Current academic results are excellent

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY

Download and complete the relevant IMESA bursary application form:

Bursary Scheme A: IMESA Bursary Application Form (for dependents of non-members) (.pdf)

Bursary Scheme B: IMESA Bursary Application Form (for dependents of members) (.pdf)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Undersigned statements declaring academic progress (issued by your University/ School)
  • Parents/ guardians proof of monthly income and student’s financial situation (affidavit)
  • Mid year exam results (certified copy)

Students will also be required to submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation, before any bursary funding is paid:

  • Medical certificate
  • Proof of enrollment at a tertiary institute for your selected qualification
  • Fee statement from your tertiary institution
