HCI Bursary 2023-2024
Hosken Consolidated Investments Limited (HCI) is an investment holding company, most of its accumulated income comes from the hotel and casino gaming industry. The authorized black company is also involved in various other investment groups, including real estate; hotels and leisure; transportation; clothing; mining; interactive games; media and broadcasting. The main shareholder of the company is the Southern African Apparel and Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) investment group.
This JSE-listed company (listed as “HCI” since 1973) has investment operations in multiple countries, including South Africa, other parts of Africa, Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and China.
HCI’s corporate social investment department, the HCI Foundation, aims to encourage South Africans to create positive and sustainable impacts for disadvantaged communities.
The HCI Foundation Scholarship Program is for students with academic excellence and financial difficulties. Students must study for a university degree (highest honor level) in any field of study, or they must be recipients of HCI Foundation scholarships.
Partial scholarship aims to cover part of the tuition fees of students, up to R33,000 per year.
Scholarship recipients do not need to repay/repay the scholarship, but need to participate in community projects, participate in mentoring and mentoring programs, and volunteers in the community.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- South African citizens OR a refugee/ asylum seekers in South Africa
- 35 years old younger on the closing date
- Current HCI Foundation bursary holder: welcome to apply if studying at a tertiary institute in South Africa
- New applicants: studying at one of the following public tertiary institutions – University of Cape Town/ University of the Western Cape/ University of Stellenbosch/ University of Johannesburg/ University of Witwatersrand/ University of Pretoria/ Rhodes University/ University of Kwa Zulu Natal/ University of the Free State/ North-West University/ Nelson Mandela University/ Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University
- Studying full-time (part-time, distance learning and TVET college studies are NOT supported)
- Gross monthly family income of less than R37 500
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY
Applications must be submitted online via the following steps:

3) Submit the list of below supporting documents
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Parents/ guardians proof of family income (payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed/ proof of grant if applicable)
- Proof of grant (if applicable)
- Motivational essay (max 750 words)
- Matric/ final results (must be sent via email/ fax/ post by 23 February 2020)

SELECTION PROCESS
All applicants will be kept up to date, via email, with regards to the status of their application.
Students who meet the entry criteria will go on to the next stage of the process.
First year students will be shortlisted and interviewed telephonically.
The final decision will be made and communicated by 7 March 2020.
