About Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS)
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) was established in 1912 when it was originally called the Department of Irrigation. As one of the South African government departments, DWS is responsible for the country’s water resources, especially for formulating and implementing the department’s policies.
DWS aims to ensure that South Africa has access to safe drinking water and sanitation and water management services to ensure the sustainable economic and social development of the country.
The Ministry of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has established a learning academy whose purpose is to help students complete their higher education in the field of water and sanitation, which is the country’s low-skill department.
DWS will award scholarships in the following areas of undergraduate and graduate study:
Undergraduate:
- Civil Engineering (BSc/ BEng/ BEng Tech/ National Diploma)
- Electrical Engineering (BSc/ BEng/ BEng Tech/ National Diploma)
- Mechanical Engineering (BSc/ BEng/ BEng Tech/ National Diploma)
- Hydrology (BSc)
- Geohydrology (BSc)
- Project Management (BSc)
- Environmental Management (BSc)
- Environmental Sciences (BSc)
- Environmental and Water Sciences (BSc)
- Water Care (National Diploma)
- Environmental Management (National Diploma)
- Biochemistry (National Diploma)
Postgraduate:
- Civil Engineering (BSc (Hons))

MORE ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SERVICE CONTRACT
The scholarship is awarded once a year and is renewed based on satisfactory academic performance. The scholarship program covers the following expenses: registration fees, tuition fees, prescribed textbook allowances, lodging, meals, and personal allowances.
After completing their studies, beneficiaries must join the Water Resources Learning Institute for up to 3 years. The shortlisted candidates will be contacted by written letter. If you do not receive feedback within 3 months of the application deadline, your application will not be considered successful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the following minimum admission criteria before applying (note that if you do not meet all the requirements, your application will not be considered):
- South African citizen
- Has completed Matric or is currently studying at Matric
- Or intend to be within the following time Study full-time in one of the above fields of study
- Study or intend to study at one of the following institutions of higher education
- Good academic performance
- Proven financial need
- The Disabled students must also apply
* Priority will be given to those from poverty and rural areas that were previously disadvantaged Student community status

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY
Download and complete the Department of Water and Sanitation Bursary Application Form (.pdf)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Grade 11 final results AND Matric latest results, if currently in Matric (certified copies)
- Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy)
- Full tertiary academic record to date, if currently at University (certified copy)
- Proof of University application/ firm offer/ provisional acceptance letter, if a new student
- Parents/ guardians proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed/ SASSA grant letter
