About Cyril Ramaphosa

The Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, formerly known as the Shanduka Foundation, was established in 2004 by the Shanduka Group and its founder, Cyril Ramaphosa. The foundation is an independent charity organization dedicated to improving lives. The foundation was renamed Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation in 2015. To achieve social change, the foundation cooperates with the AdaptaSchool Foundation, which includes Thari Program, Kagiso Shanduka Trust, Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust and Black Umbrellas.

The Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation established the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET) to help eligible South African students obtain better job qualifications. CRET is not only looking for the most accomplished people, but also looking for candidates who can demonstrate the potential to thrive under the right conditions and with the right support. CRET will not only provide financial support, but also psychological and social support, guidance and contact. All winners will have the opportunity to participate in the twice-a-year intensive work experience program during the holidays to obtain additional soft skills training and exchange opportunities. The beneficiaries are also exposed to team building activities, personal development and a supportive family environment.

Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust Bursaries

The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET) is a program of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation to help South African students from disadvantaged backgrounds continue their higher education to improve their job qualifications. CRET is a non-profit organization that aims to improve lives and create opportunity through the popularization of education and the development of the industry.

CRET scholarships are awarded at institutions recognized by relevant higher education institutions for no more than 5 years. The total value of the scholarship varies depending on the cost structure of the educational institution and the recipient’s educational expenses. Generally speaking, the scholarship will include tuition, books and other learning materials, room and board, and small allowances for living expenses, depending on other expenses. The upper limit of the amount distribution for each recipient is a certain value discussed before signing the scholarship agreement, and it is valid for one year. Based on academic performance, commitment to the program, communication policies, and other criteria detailed in the scholarship contract, the scholarship can be renewed each academic year.

After completing student qualifications, beneficiaries do not need to work for the foundation. Additionally, CRET is not required to provide employment opportunities to beneficiaries. CRET does not require beneficiaries to reimburse the amount invested in their studies.

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

    • Unemployed and full-time students of 16 to 30 year old who wish to pursue undergraduate studies at an accredited South African institution
    • South African citizens with a valid South African ID number
    • Registered and accepted student at an accredited institution
    • Demonstrate good academic, developmental communication skills, leadership, high values and empathetic ability
    • Proven financial need
    • Applicants who are students or wish to pursue studies in relevant and scarce skills as determined by the Department of Labour, SETAs and other labour/economic advisors, will be given preference
    • Students in any year of study who do not have a higher education qualification and is not applying for postgraduate studies are eligible to apply
    • Applications for skills development programmes will be considered based on the Bursary Selection Committee requirements and decision results
  • Distance education and part-time students may apply as long as they meet all the requirements and eligibility
  • Recipients of bursaries or funding from other sources may also be considered based on additional need

What are the study priority areas?

CRET bursary applicants may apply to study any entry-level/first-time study module/undergraduate qualification of their choice provided that the duration of studies is no longer than 5 years and the institution is accredited by the relevant Higher Education authority.

Is the bursary only offered to first-year students?

Students in any year of study are eligible to apply, as long as the applicant does not already hold a higher education qualification and is not applying for postgraduate studies.

Are students studying towards a certificate qualification eligible?

All application for skills development programmes will be considered, dependant on the requirements and decision outcomes by the Bursary Selection Committee.

Are distance education and part-time students eligible for a bursary?

Yes, provided they are eligible in all other respects.

Are recipients of other bursaries eligible to apply for a CRETbursary?

If an applicant has already been granted a bursary, the CRET programme may consider their application based on additional need. However, any bursary applicant to the CRET Programme is encouraged to have proven application for other bursary opportunities, including NSFAS.

Will late applications be considered?

No. Applications close on 31 October 2023 so please apply before the deadline.

How much is a CRET bursary worth?

Institutions have different cost structures, so the total value of a bursary differs from institution to institution. CRETbursaries are personalised to cover the successful recipient’s essential expenses., based on an individual estimation and needs requirement.

What does the bursary cover?

Expenses covered are dependent on need, but may include tuition, books and other learning materials, accommodation expenses and meals, and where motivated, a small stipend for living expenses, dependent on other expenses The allocation to any individual student is capped at a specific value which is discussed with the student prior to signing of a Bursary Agreement. This agreement is binding for one year.

Is a CRET bursary recipient required to serve at the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, or its partner entities, upon completion of qualification?

Students are not obligated to work for the Foundation upon the completion of their qualification and employment opportunities are not guaranteed by the Trust.

Must a CRET bursary be repaid?

No, the CRET bursary does not legally obligate bursary recipients to repay the funds invested into their studies upon completion of their desired qualification or failure to complete their studies. A bursary is allocated on a completion date basis but is renewable each year, dependant on academic results, commitment to the programme, communication policies, and other criteria which is shared on the successful signing of a bursary contract.

Are foreign students eligible for a CRET bursary?

No, the CRET bursary is only awarded to South African students residing and studying in accredited South African institutions. Study abroad or postgraduate study is also not considered.
