Brief on Allan Gray Orbis Fellowship Bursary 

Allan Gray established the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation in 2005. His ambition is to help students who will become future entrepreneurs in South Africa to make long-term contributions to the country. The Foundation receives cash from Allan Gray Limited’s tax profit grant.

Currently, the foundation is active in four African countries: South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, and Botswana. The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Scholarship Program aims to provide financing for college-bound students as well as support and development for individuals with an entrepreneurial attitude.

The Gray Orbis Foundation awards up to 100 Fellowships to deserving students each year, within the following fields:

  • Engineering
  • Law
  • Commerce
  • Science
  • Humanities
  • Health Science (excluding Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science)

Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship covers the fellowship:

  • university tuition fees
  • prescribed books
  • university accommodation
  •  meals
  • monthly living stipend
  •  tutor allowance.

 Requirements for Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship 

The listed below are requirements for applicants to meet to be accepted

  • South African citizen (or citizen of Botswana/ Namibia/ Swaziland)
  • Under 21 years old in 2019
  • Currently in Matric
  • Achieved a minimum of level 5 for Mathematics HG in Grade 11 finals
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of level 6 in Grade 11 finals (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Intend on studying towards a degree qualification within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • Intend on studying at one of the following partner universities: University of Johannesburg/ University of the Witwatersrand/ University of Pretoria/ University of Cape Town/ University of the Western Cape/ Stellenbosch University/ TSIBA (2nd year intake)/ Rhodes University/ Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University/ University of KwaZulu-Natal/ University of the Free State
  • Completed the National Benchmark Test
  • Strong leadership qualities or entrepreneurially-minded

Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship University students (1st/ 2nd year)

  • South African citizen (or citizen of Botswana/ Namibia/ Swaziland)
  • 1st year students: under 22 years old
  • 2nd year students: under 23 years old
  • Completed Matric
  • Studying towards a degree qualification within one of the aforementioned fields of study
  • Studying at one of the following partner universities: University of Johannesburg/ University of the Witwatersrand/ University of Pretoria/ University of Cape Town/ University of the Western Cape/ Stellenbosch University/ TSIBA (2nd year intake)/ Rhodes University/ Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University/ University of KwaZulu-Natal/ University of the Free State
  • 1st year students: achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for June 2019 exams
  • 2nd year students: achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for 2018 final exams AND June 2019 exams
  • Strong leadership qualities or entrepreneurial-minded

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Recent photograph (passport size)
  • Grade 10 final academic record (certified copy)
  • Grade 11 final academic record (certified copy)
  • Grade 12 latest academic record (certified copy)
  • Academic/ recognition/ extra-curricular awards received in Grade 10/ 11/ 12 (certified copies)
  • Reference from an Educator (stamped, signed and sealed in a separate envelope)
